Alice lived

a poem from the introduction to "Alice and Women"

Alice lived in a house by the stream
Her heart was made of clay;
She sang soft songs and combed her hair;
She dreamed of salt sea spray.

Alice lived in a house by the moat
Her heart was made of sand;
She courted men and sang no more
Her hair was a silver band.

Alice lived in a house by the lake
Her heart was made of earth;
She called the fishes, made them chant,
Gave thanks and welcomed mirth.

Alice lived in a house by the sea
Her heart was made of stone;
With curling patterns, etched in grey
And scratched with an amber bone.
